The goal of this project is to develop a software system to display geo-referenced aerial imagery, on large-scale tiled displays, particularly HIPerWall, the world's largest tiled display. The system consists of (1) a control program that resides on a control machine to specify the global location (coordinates) and field of view for the entire display; and (2) a client program that runs on each of the display computers to fetch and display the appropriate imagery to generate a unified image on the tiled display. Data is obtained from TerraServer either by encoding the proper coordinates in the URL or using the TerraServer Web Services. The prototype system supports display of USGS satelite images and USGS Topo Maps, and USGS Urban Area Ortho imagery, where available, for the continental United States. The node programs support an HTTP proxy to fetch data for them rather than fetching data directly if the Web Service interface is not used. Leveraging HIPerWall's 50 display tiles, the objective is to provide the user with the "BIG PICTURE," meaning that for a selected viewpoint each display tile will show one unique subsection of a bigger composite image or terrain model, which can be seamlessly navigated.
